Mitchell Herbert Ellis was an American jazz guitarist. Growing up on the outskirts of Dallas, Texas, Ellis first heard the electric guitar performed by George Barnes on a radio program. This experience is said to have inspired him to take up the guitar. In fact, the opening number played by the quartet (which also includes pianist Ross Tompkins, bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Jake Hanna) is a rapid version of "Shine" and there is also an uptempo rendition of Herb Ellis, the critically acclaimed jazz guitarist who played with such luminaries as Ella Fitzgerald and was a member once of the celebrated Oscar Peterson Trio, died Sunday, his son said. He Herb Ellis died Sunday, March 28, in Los Angeles. He was 88 years old and reportedly suffered from Alzheimer's disease. UPDATE: NPR's Morning Edition also ran a remembrance.
